• alodes: Library containing a fast DES implementation. It also contains a multiple precision integer arithmetic library. Written in Finland by Antti Louko. Freely available for non-commercial use. Official distribution is in kampi.hut.fi:/alo/des-dist.tar.Z.

• BlackBox by Interscope is an easy to install and use enhancement to the Windows 95 and NT shell. Uses DES encryption. It is available at http://www.interscope.ro/blackbox. (shareware)

• Chalmers DES library contains a plain DES implementation. It is available in www.nic.funet.fi/pub/crypt/cryptography/symmetric/des.

• CodeDrag encrypts your personal data using strong encryption algorithms like Triple DES and Blowfish. Developed at FIM - University of Linz, Austria. CodeDrag is available at http://www.fim.uni-linz.ac.at/codeddrag/codedrag.htm. (shareware)

• Crypto++ is a cryptographic C++ library for MSDOS, Windows NT, and Unix. It supports MD5, SHS, DES, IDEA, WAKE, RC4, RC5, Blowfish, Diamond, Diamond Lite, Sapphire, Luby-Rackoff, MDC, various modes, Diffie-Hellman, RSA, DSA, ElGamal, BBS, gzip compression, Shamir's secret sharing scheme, Rabin's information dispersal scheme, and zero-knowledge prover and verifier for graph isomorphism. There are also various miscellaneous modules such as base 64 coding and 32-bit CRC. Several people have been talking favorably about its design. It is available at www.nic.funet.fi/pub/crypt/cryptography/libs/crypto11.zip and ftp.hacktic.nl:/pub/replay/pub/crypto/LIBS/crypto11.zip.

• Destoo is yet another plain DES implementation. It is available in www.nic.funet.fi/pub/crypt/cryptography/symmetric/des. The same directory contains a many other DES implementations and various variants for a number of platforms.

• Elliptic is a public domain implementation of elliptic curves public key cryptography. It is not known to be patented (except for the claimed universal public key cryptography patent which will expire in an year or two anyway). It is available in www.nic.funet.fi/pub/crypt/cryptography/asymmetric/elliptic.

• Encrypted Magic Folders Hides folders on your hard drive and encrypts their contents. It is available at http://www.pc-magic.com/des.htm#emf.

• idea86 is a 80x86 assembler implementation of IDEA. It is available in ftp.ox.ac.uk:/pub/crypto/misc and www.nic.funet.fi/pub/crypt/cryptography/symmetric/idea.

• Kremlin Encryption Suite offers encryption with up to an 160 bit key. It is available at http://www.kremlinencrypt.com/. (shareware)

• PrivaSuite: contains PrivaSoft - Image encryption for fax and printout security, PrivaMail - Text encryption for E-mail and groupware security, PrivaFile - File encryption & compression for file transfer and archive security. PrivaSuite is available for download at www.aliroo.com.

• Pretty Good Privacy (PGP). The de facto standard of encryption software. DOS, Windows and UNIX versions are available. It is available at http://www.pgp.com. Also see Cryptography and Encryption.

• Python Cryptographic Toolkit. A cryptographic toolkit for the Python programming language. Includes hash functions (Haval, MD2, MD4, MD5, SHA), private-key encryption (Blowfish, DES, DES3, Diamond, IDEA, RC4, 32-bit RC5, Redoc III), public-key encryption (DSS, ElGamal, RSA). It is available at ftp.cwi.nl:/pub/pct/pycrypt100.tgz. It is mostly in the public domain (some parts under GPL).

• RSAREF: The reference implementation of RSA and DES for use in PEM (Privacy Enhanced Mail) from RSA Data Security, Inc. Can be freely used for non-commercial use, at least in the United States. This is the only legal way to use RSA in the United States without a license. In other countries it is not necessary to resort to such madness. Other implementations of RSA and DES are available that are faster, more portable, and more flexible.

  There are two versions of RSAREF, called RSAREF and RSAREF2. They have minor differences and slightly different licensing conditions. Both are available e.g. from www.nic.funet.fi/pub/crypt/cryptography/asymmetric/rsa.

• RSAEURO: An European implementation of RSA. Available e.g. from www.nic.funet.fi/pub/crypt/cryptography/asymmetric/rsa.

• SafeHouse is a transparent, on-the-fly hard drive encryption package for Windows 3.x, Windows 95 and Windows NT by PC Dynamics, Inc. A 40-bit DES shareware version of the software which is BXA approved for Internet distribution is available for evaluation at http://www.pcdynamics.com/SafeHouse/.

• Safer is an implementation of the safer cipher. It is available in www.nic.funet.fi/pub/crypt/cryptography/symmetric/safer.

• SSLeay: Library implementing the SSL (Secure Socket Layer) protocol. Also includes a very fast DES implementation and implementations of many other algorithms such as DES, IDEA, RC4, RSA, and MD5. The official distribution location is ftp.psy.uq.oz.au:/pub/Crypto/SSL. It works under Unix, and is also available as a Windows DLL. There is a mirror for SSL stuff in www.nic.funet.fi/pub/un= ix/security/login/SSL.

• Wincrdll is a collection of Windows DLL libraries, with source code, that implement popular strong cryptographic algorithms. It is available in ftp.ox.ac.uk:/pub/crypto/misc/wincrdll.zip.

• A lot of assorted cryptographic algorithms, programs, and information can be found in ftp.ox.ac.uk:/pub/crypto/misc, ftp.hacktic.nl:/pub/replay/pub/crypto, and www.nic.funet.fi/pub/crypt.

• TEA, a Tiny Encryption Algorithm.

Support Libraries

• GNU Multiple Precision Library (library to perform arbitrary precision integer arithmetic). This is not cryptographic software, but can be very useful for implementing RSA and other public key methods. It is fast and quite portable. It should be available from any ftp site carrying GNU software (e.g., www.nic.funet.fi/pub/gnu/prep). A local copy of gmp-1.3.2.tar.gz is here.

• Freelip is the multiple precision integer library that was used in breaking RSA-129. It is freely available for non-commercial use. A local copy is in freelip_1.0.tar.gz.

• Noiz - a simple package for accumulating and dispensing cryptographically strong noise, using MD5 as a stirring function. In www.nic.funet.fi/pub/crypt/random.

• Socks is a generic socket library designed to work well in a firewalled environment. It is available in www.nic.funet.fi/pub/unix/security/firewalls/socks.
